Paul has been very busy of late with numerous concerts, cd releases, lectures, workshops and books!
The Cromar Folk club has been going from strength to strength with a wide variety of musicians and singers coming from far afield to perform and listen. The Folk club, which was founded by Paul, meets on the last firday of every month at 8pm in The Aberdeen Arms. Admission is £5 and tickets are available on the door.
The Fiddle competition at Aboyne Highland Games had a very succesful 2nd year with Nicola Auchnie from Turriff taking 1st place. Adjudicators were Paul and Douglas Lawrence.
Paul had a great trip to the states earlier in the year. He was a guest tutor at Pinewoods Fiddle Camp and played at local concerts and sessions over a 3 week period as well as group and induvidual teaching. He has already had confirmation of next years camp and is delighted to have been asked over again.
There has been four new releases of books and cds over the year, two of which are Pauls own work and two which he helped bring to fruition through his post as a research fellow at Aberdeen University's Elphinstone Insitute. Pauls new CD "Home and Beauty", which is on the Greentra label was released to great critical acclaim. Paul felt that although he had recorded and released many solo CD's over the years, not all were available to buy so he picked his favourite tracks from all of his recordings and hs produced a varied and interesting complilation in "Home and Beauty". His own music book "The Lochnagar Collection", which was produced by Highland Music Trust was lanched earlier in the year and contains 308 of Pauls compositions. Included in the book are articles on Scottish Fiddling, Scottish Fiddlers, photograhs and stories behind all the tunes.
Paul, in conjunction with Pat MacAndrew, The Elphinstone Institute and Greentrax produced a cd of Hector MacAndrews playing. The tracks, which had been recorded very informally in various locations, including Hectors ain fireside were mixed and mastered and brought out on the Greentrax Label. It is the first CD of Hectors playing and has been one of Music in Scotlands bestselling CD's of 2009. Paul's final project for the Elpinstone Institute was toput together a collection of previously unpublished or out of print music from The North East of Scotland. The book "The Elphinstone Collection" was produced by Skye publishing company Taigh Na Teud. It includes all of Peter Milnes known work and unpublished music by James Scott Skinner, William Marshall, Hector MacAndrew and Paul Anderson to name just a few.
Pauls most recent commission was to write a tune for Aberdeenshire Councils Homecoming event. The tune "The Land of the Standing Stones" was then gifted to different musicians and they, in turn, created a new piece of music based around Pauls original tune. There was a showcase concert of all the music on St Andrews Night in Inverurie Town Hall and included Aberdeenshire Youth String Orchestra, Jazz band, folk group, The Old Blind Dogs, piano and string quartet and electronic versions of "The Land of the Standing Stones". A very enjoyable night indeed!
Paul has had a few folk commenting that they can't email properly from this website. If you want to get in touch with Paul his email is andersoncromar@aol.com He'd love to hear from you!
